Server Side Includes (SSI) is a simple server-side language, which enables you to incorporate text from a given source inside a website. In the most popular situation, the text from a file is incorporated in a different one, giving a website the sense it is dynamic. For example, in case your site involves 10 web pages, five of them can have the content of any kind of file, like horoscope.txt. As soon as you change this text file, the new content will come up on all five pages, which will enable you to update your website faster and easier than if you had to update an element of all five pages. Server Side Includes is in some cases employed to contain the output of basic commands, scripts or functions as well - a hit counter that is shown on the website, the present date and time or the customer's IP address. Any webpage that utilizes SSI must have a particular extension - .shtml.
Server Side Includes in Website Hosting
You will be able to use Server Side Includes with all website hosting plans that we offer you and activate it independently for every domain or subdomain inside of your hosting account. This can be done with an .htaccess file, which needs to be positiioned in the folder where you want to use SSI and you have to enter a few lines of code in that file. You can get the code within our Knowledgebase section, so you can just copy and paste it, since you do not need any coding skills to benefit from all capabilities that our solutions incorporate. In case you have by now built your website and you want to use Server Side Includes later, you have to ensure that you rename the files from .html to .shtml and fix the links on the website, or else SSI will not work.
Server Side Includes in Semi-dedicated Hosting
It will not take you more than a moment to enable Server Side Includes when you have a semi-dedicated server package from us. When you choose to activate this feature, you have to set up an .htaccess file in the main folder for the domain name or subdomain where you want SSI to be enabled. In this file, you need to copy and paste some code, which you can get in the FAQ article we have dedicated to SSI. You can find the latter in the Help section of your Hosting Control Panel, so you do not require any prior experience with these types of things. The only two things you need to deal with are renaming all of web pages that will use Server Side Includes from .html to .shtml and editing all of the links on your website, to ensure that they lead to the renamed files.
